Thinking Hats

Hi everyone,

On Thursday (19 April), you will have a “Thinking Hats” Workshop to develop your group scenarios for Kayaköy.

By thinking and discussing with these 5 hats, you will imagine a scenario (e.g. future, parallel universe, realistic) for a community inhabiting Kayaköy. In designing the “master” scenario for your “imagined” habitat, you will basically explore answers to these WH questions: What? Why? Where? How? Who? When?

What kind of a spatial pattern? What kind of form? What is the technology? How does the society commute? How is life between buildings? What kind of society is there? How many people are there? What kind of homes are they living in? how is the atmosphere? What are the sounds? How does everyday life look like? What is the story of a day? How does the habitat function? What kind of socio-cultural activities are there? Where do people eat? Where do they enjoy to go? How is the place governed?

Thinking Hats will help us to look at problems from different perspectives at the same time. Each hat will have a different style of thinking:

“The White Hat calls for information known or needed. The facts, just the facts.

The Black Hat is judgment – the devil’s advocate or why something may not work. Spot the difficulties and dangers; where things might go wrong. Probably the most powerful and useful of the Hats but a problem if overused.

The Yellow Hat symbolizes brightness and optimism. Under this hat you explore the positives and probe for value and benefit.

The Green Hat focuses on creativity; the possibilities, alternatives, and new ideas. It’s an opportunity to express new concepts and new perceptions.

The Blue Hat is used to manage the thinking process. It’s the hat worn by people chairing meetings, for example. When facing difficulties because ideas are running dry, they may direct activity into Green Hat thinking. When contingency plans are needed, they will ask for Black Hat thinking.”
